You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone

The title might sound like a bit of a cliché, but when the marketing guys asked me to write a blog I sat pondering the question: “What has IronTree learnt from the lockdown?”

I was thinking how lucky IronTree has been to continue business as usual. We already had cloud-hosted VoIP and a cloud-hosted VPS, and we could all work from home. We proved the age-old lesson of always being prepared, but that’s not really what we learnt, we knew that already, and were just in the right place at the right time with the right set of circumstances.

Lockdown became increasingly interesting the longer it went on. As we fell more and more into an online world, one without physical interaction, which of course was necessary, I wondered what the long-term repercussions of this sort of online life would be. Never having had a time like this, we don’t have a reference point to draw from.

It’s interesting to look at the stock exchange indexes around the world and what they show from 1 January 2020. The general indexes are down and the technology indexes are up:

It left me wondering what long-lasting effect it was going to have on individuals – their mental health, work health, social life – and on the planet.

From a personal point of view social media drove me insane, and it was unsettling to see my kids constantly on their screens, meeting their friends online only.

But do you know what I really learnt? I learnt that I missed going to the office to see my colleagues and being a part of a vibrant office culture that we have. Hugs, handshakes, high-fives – they’re more important than I realised. You don’t really know what you’ve got until it’s gone.

We spend almost every day of our lives with our colleagues, who are also our friends. We laugh together and work towards a shared goal. We are all on the same rollercoaster and sometimes you don’t realise how nice it is to have other people on the ride with you until you’re the only one bellowing as the coaster tips over the peak. It’s not much fun without the others.

We’ve all learnt not to take that for granted anymore. My heart truly goes out to those businesses who didn’t make it through.
